The studio treats easel paintings from all periods in a variety of media and supports. Treatments usually involve some or all of the following:

  • Restoration: including surface cleaning; removal of yellowed varnish layers and discoloured retouchings; filling of paint losses; retouching and varnishing.
  • Conservation: including consolidation of ground and paint layers; structural treatment of canvas supports such as repair of tears, strip lining or lining; and backing of wooden panels or hardboard supports.
  • Technical examination of paintings: as required, including the use of ultraviolet light, binocular microscopy, infrared, X-rays and pigment analysis.
  • Reframing to museum standards, with glazing and backboards as required.
  • Treatments are fully documented with digital photography and written reports.
